La Macina di San Cresci

“Artists are interesting creatures. We can be obsessive, dedicated, spirited and single minded in our pursuit for that perfect realisation of our art. We tend to be outsiders and are often that square peg in the round hole, so when you find an oasis like San Cresci you hold on tight -- for it’s that sense of belonging which welcomes you.”

I have been working with themes of safety, feelings of safety and false feelings of safety for a few years now, since our family survived a car crash in 2007. Last year I was awarded a one-year grant from Svenska Kulturfonden, and have been able to concentrate fully on creating new artworks for an exhibition with the theme safe/unsafe, which is a joint exhibition with Jimmy Pulli in january 2010.

My artworks are usually large-format graphic prints in Carborundum and Monotype techniques. The purpose of my residency at La Macina di San Cresci was to find new sources of inspiration and new angles on the theme. As a result I have now made sketches for a new series of prints, which will borrow symbols and imagery of the Catholic patron saints, a world which would have remained largely unkown to me if not for my time in the residency.
