La Macina di San Cresci

“Artists are interesting creatures. We can be obsessive, dedicated, spirited and single minded in our pursuit for that perfect realisation of our art. We tend to be outsiders and are often that square peg in the round hole, so when you find an oasis like San Cresci you hold on tight -- for it’s that sense of belonging which welcomes you.”

Katie was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. A first generation Canadian, growing up bi-racial and autistic, Katie has used the experience of existing between worlds to inform her work, which delves into themes of racial identity, mental health and perception of self. Utilizing self-portraiture, masks and obscured faces to reflect her neurodivergence and references from her Asian and European ancestry, her work is an intimate insight into feeling out of place.

Katie studied commercial illustration and graphic design and quickly learned she was not suited for the structure of the corporate world, and found herself in the DIY comic scene where she was able to nurture her love of writing and hone her signature style with brush and ink.

Through this community, Katie connected with artists on the forefront of contemporary, blackwork tattooing and began working as an illustrative tattooer in 2014.

Since then, Katie’s work has ranged from product packaging to murals to fine art that has been showcased across North America.
