In the spring of 2009 I was selected as one of two artists to make a proposal for a public artwork to be situated in Folkhälsan's (http://www.folkhalsan.fi/) new housing facility in Espoo, Finland. During my residency at La Macina di San Cresci my proposal, a sculptural installation called "Räcka", was selected as winner of the competition and will thus be realized in 2009-2010. The artwork is a visual play with the balance of light and shadow, physical mass and the combined strength of those who have to carry it. The installation presents a metaphor for the role the organization Folkhälsan has in the Finnish society.
The artwork will be a sculpture made from five large logs, installed indoors inside of a large skylight. The sculpture will appear to be strung up with a thousand thin white polyester strings, which together carry its weight and stretch out into the room beneath. Work with the installation will commence at distance during my residency, planning structural elements of the building and doing other arrangements.
During my stay at La Macina di San Cresci I also study themes of safety and feelings of safety in an unfamiliar setting. It is part of a longer project which I am working on until the end of 2009. The work will consist of wood sculpture installations and processed sound recordings, and will be presented in two joint exhibitions with Sini Björkholm in 2010.
